What’s new in image sensing
Vision and light-sensor supplier Hamamatsu had some of its not-yet-released image sensor products on display. They included image sensors enhanced for the near-infrared range (NIR) and MPPC (multi-pixel photon counter) devices also called silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). These use multiple APD (avalanche photodiode) pixels operating in Geiger mode – basically where a photon-generated carrier triggers an avalanche current. MPPC is great at detecting extremely weak light.
