When college students go electric racing
Engineering students from the University of Michigan showed a few of the components of the electric race car they built, including this battery/inverter module. It contains 20 kW-worth of lithium-iron-oxide prismatic cells along with a battery management system and inverter. It rides in one of the side pods and powers one of the electric traction motors in the car, which has a hybrid powertrain. The car races in a Formula Hybrid event taking place each spring at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The competition is part of the SAE Collegiate Design Series wherein students design and build a formula-style electric or plug-in hybrid racecar and compete in a series of events where the emphasis is on drivetrain innovation and fuel efficiency in a high-performance application.
