4K HDR multimedia video processor is pin-compatible with Android TV SoC

September 15, 2017 By Aimee Kalnoskas Leave a Comment

Synaptics Incorporated announced its new VideoSmart BG5CT multimedia solution featuring 4K Advanced HDR video processing for the global set-top-box market. The Synaptics VideoSmart™ BG5CT is the company’s sixth-generation video processor technology and part of the award-winning multimedia portfolio recently acquired from Marvell. Synaptics completed the acquisition of Marvell’s Multimedia Solutions Business on September 8, 2017.

The BG5CT is pin compatible with the highly-successful previous-generation Android TV SoC (BG4CT) and offers key feature upgrades including Advanced HDR and higher performance. The BG5CT integrates a 1.6 GHz 15K DMIPs Quad Core ARM CPU, 2.8 GPixel per second GPU, carrier-grade security, and state-of-the-art power management techniques, all designed to enable Pay TV operators and set-top-box manufacturers to cost-effectively deliver revenue generating entertainment and gaming services to their subscribers.

Synaptics’ Qdeo video processing technology with Advanced HDR is a key enabler for broad rollout of 4K services by Pay TV operators. The BG5CT’s Advanced HDR supports both Dolby Vision and Technicolor HDR, technologies that are already widely adopted by TV manufacturers, content creators, and service operators. Pay TV operators want to deliver a consistent high-quality viewing experience regardless of content, and the BG5CT with Dolby Vision and Technicolor HDR technologies, not only delivers excellent 4K quality video, but also supports up-conversion of SDR content for best-in-class image quality.

“Our recent acquisition of Marvell’s multimedia solutions business reflects Synaptics’ firm commitment to lead in open platform adoption like Android TV for the Pay TV industry and advances our leadership in the smart home market,” said Huibert Verhoeven, senior vice president and general manager, IoT Division, Synaptics. “Synaptics is uniquely positioned to innovate on entertainment platforms with our core human interface portfolio of voice, audio, biometrics, touch, and display and now an immersive visual experience.”

Security is critical for the Pay TV market, and Synaptics works closely with conditional access system (CAS) standards leaders including Verimatrix and Nagravision to ensure that BG5CT incorporates a robust security architecture that is compliant with Pay TV operator requirements worldwide.

The BG5CT’s optimal blend of high-performance and low-power targets the fastest growing segments of the set-top-box market. Primary SDKs for BG5CT will include Android TV and RDK. Its feature-rich small footprint reduces bill-of-materials and is an ideal enabler of the sleek small form-factor set-top-boxes that consumers are demanding. Synaptics continues its performance leadership with additional transcoding capabilities for “watch anywhere” multi-screen broadcasts or recorded content on the device of your choice whether smartphone, tablet, or PC.
