Avnet, a global technology distributor, introduced the Avnet MicroZed Industrial IoT Starter Kit, an out-of-the-box system, backed by industry solutions from IBM, Wind River and Xilinx, designed to simplify customers’ prototype and development efforts, while providing an easy and quick transition to production.

The MicroZed Industrial IoT Starter Kit builds on Avnet’s commitment to support customers’ edge-to-cloud development of Internet-connected solutions and includes all the necessary building blocks for developing a production-ready, IoT-enabled, industrial processing system. The platform is based on Avnet’s MicroZed system-on-module (SoM) with a Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC from Xilinx and pluggable sensor solutions from Maxim Integrated and STMicroelectronics.

The kit integrates the IBM Watson IoT Platform agent on top of a custom-configured, certified image of the Wind River Pulsar Linux operating system, now standard on MicroZed and PicoZed system-on-modules. Using a standard MQTT messaging protocol, IBM’s Watson IoT Platform agent enables registered, secure connection to the Watson IoT Platform and additional cloud services and applications from the IBM Bluemix portfolio. These provide a rich palette of composable services to rapidly enhance IoT solutions with cognitive capabilities.

The Avnet Industrial IoT Starter Kit includes the following:

  • MicroZed 7010 SoM based on the Xilinx Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC and pre-loaded with Wind River’s new Pulsar Linux operating system;
  • IBM Watson IoT agent;
  • MicroZed Arduino Carrier Card;
  • pluggable sensors: Motion and Environmental Sensor Board from STMicroelectronics and Thermocouple-to-Digital Pmod sensor module from Maxim Integrated;
  • Ethernet, USB and power cables; and
  • a free trial of IBM Bluemix services.

The Avnet Industrial IoT Starter Kit sells for $299 and is available for ordering now with shipments starting late May 2016. The Avnet Industrial IoT Starter Kit is the latest example of how Avnet is helping customers, ranging from original equipment manufacturers to solution providers, capitalize on the opportunities across the entire IoT ecosystem. Avnet offers a range of resources from the edge to the enterprise to develop IoT solutions that effectively gather information, connect to the Internet and cloud environments, integrate with data centers and securely manage and analyze data.

The company also recently introduced a new collaboration with IBM to develop IoT solutions built on the IBM Watson IoT Platform, as well as the Visible ThingsTM platform for the development of IoT systems and applications. A demonstration of the Visible Things platform can be seen in Avnet’s booth #305 during the IoT World show.
