STMicroelectronics has introduced the ST25DA-C, a secure NFC chip designed for smart-home devices using the Matter 1.5 specification. The device supports NFC-based onboarding so that users can add lighting, access control products, cameras, or other IoT equipment to a home network by tapping a smartphone. The chip is the first commercial component aligned with recent updates to the Matter standard.
The ST25DA-C is an NFC Forum Type 4 tag that performs the cryptographic operations required for Matter commissioning. It can operate using harvested energy from the RF field, allowing onboarding of devices that are not yet powered and supporting the installation of multiple devices in sequence.
Security features include a secure element for device authentication and storage of cryptographic keys, certificates, and network credentials. The product is based on Common Criteria–certified hardware and is planned to meet GlobalPlatform SESIP Level 3 requirements.
The chip is offered in a DFN8 package for evaluation and sampling, with mass production planned for 2026. Documentation, samples, and evaluation kits are available through STMicroelectronics sales channels.
